Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli: Farabi believes reason is free

 | Post date: 2023/03/1 |

The first universal Congress of "Farabi and Islamic Culture and Civilization" started with the message of Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli at the Institute of Cultural and Social Studies of the Ministry of Science in Tehran.

In this message, Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli, first praised and thanked the organizers of this universal congress and said, "the course of the Abu Nasr Farabi commemoration congress is very broad and wide-ranging. It is hoped that this will be repeated so all the scientific angles of this great Islamic thinker and theologian introduced more than ever and promoted.

By expressing that Farabi started the monotheism of God from the knowing of God himself, he said, "The way that Farabi took steps in the theology is that he goes from the oneness of God to realize his uniqueness, because of the insistence of religious traditions by the blessing of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) is to Know Allah from his Godship. Although the head and stem of the world, are the signs of Allah, but knowing God from Godship is the best way. Farabi started divine monotheism from the knowledge of God himself. From being single and simple, it reached its uniqueness, because God is sheer existence, and pure existence and«صرف الشیء لا یتثنی و لا یتکرر».

His Eminence states, "This argument of Farabi, which is inferring from oneness to uniqueness, from simple and mere being to the understanding that God has no associate; this is outstanding argument of Farabi.

Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli stated, "The enlightened expression of Ali bin Abi Talib (peace be upon him) in monotheism is that because God is eternal, He is illimitable, if He is illimitable, He leaves no room for anything else. This is the first step taken by Abu Nasr Farabi.

extraordinary expression of Allameh Tabatabai about Farabi

He said, "our beloved teacher, The late Allamah Tabatabai had an eloquent expression about Farabi and said: If we sum up the late Bu Ali with all his greatness in the field of intellect and thought, and Sadr al-Mutalahin with all his ambitions in intellect and thought, they will be Farabi. He believed so about Farabi.

Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli considered tolerance as one of the Farabi's characteristics and stated: Another thing about Farabi is the Sharh al-Sadr (his tolerance for the opposite thoughts). The description of Sadr is that it brings the multitude back to unity as much as it can. It leaves the things that cause division and considers that common principle as one, and returns this oneness to uniqueness, and returns any plurality to unity, except for the plurality that originates in low desires. Farabi gathered between the acquired and present knowledge, between logic and mysticism, between view and sight, between look and seeing, gathered and brought together in one place by his Sharh al-Sadr. Of course, the branches of thought have their own place, but this needs Sharh al-Sadr to gather them all.

Stating that Farabi is the first teacher in Islamic fields, he said, "Farabi is not only the second teacher in teaching science, but he is the first teacher in Islamic fields in correct congregating the thoughts of thinkers. It is possible for someone to combine between Plato and Aristotle, it is possible to combine between mysticism and logic, it is possible to combine between reason and narration, but all of these are mixed together. the one who combines between these in a correct way, and not reducing from intellect or narration, nor on mysticism, nor on logic, nor on intuition, nor on attainment, nor on looking, nor on seeing, nor on vision, nor on sight, was Abu Nasr al-Farabi.

His Holiness continued: The comprehensiveness and Sharh Al-Sadr of Farabi succeed him to combine the opinions of Plato, Plotinus, Aristotle, and others. This is the true meaning of a teacher. This means how he trained Shaykh Eshraq, who brought together the mysticism and logic, he trained Sadr al-Mutalaheen, who brought together Masha and Ishraq and mysticism, and he trained other thinkers to speak comprehensively. This being a teacher means to show the way on an overall level. To lead at the over-all level. This is the imam (leader) of the next philosophers. This is the greatest thinker of the next philosophers.

In another part of this message, he stated: Another thing that Farabi brought was that he said: Man cannot liberate the state and the nation unless he is free himself. Human freedom lies in the rule of reason, not fantasy. The late Farabi's statement is that this intellect trains imagination and illusion as much as it can so that they are his servants and his students. Farabi's high statement is that a wise man stops illusions and imagination as long as he is awake, but if a person sleeps, the intellect does not work, but the imagination begins to work.

His eminence stated that the opinion of the late Farabi is if the intellect sleeps, this freedom is not a favorable freedom, and stated, "If, God forbid, the intellect of the society, or the intellect of the Howzeh, or the intellect of the university sleeps, the imagination will act as it is in a dream. If the society's intelligence sleeps, the leaders of the society sleep, are absent or do not work or do not work sufficiently or do not obey the intellect or their leadership is weak, the imagination is wild. When the imagination unleashes. a person becomes Mokhtal , and it is stated in the Qur'an that Allah does not love Mokhtal. a person who weaves imaginations, who demands freedom without reason, is not loved by Allah.

By stating that freedom is not in imagination, but it is in reason, he said, " Farabi belives freedom for reason, because reason itself is free; it neither accepts scientific ignorance nor practical ignorance. This is the ruler of thought. Wherever there is reason, the thought is accurate. If reason sleeps, or a person has fallen asleep, imagination fantasizes. When the Holy Qur'an mentions reason with glory, you can see Quran do not respect anyone to such an extent.

His Eminence said, "Allah, the Almighty says in the Holy Qur'an, we sent prophets﴿لِئَلاَّ یکُونَ لِلنَّاسِ عَلَی اللَّهِ حُجَّهٌ بَعْدَ الرُّسُلِ﴾ so that after death people would not protest against me, God and they would not argue against me, "You knew we would come to such a place after death, why didn't you send us a guide? The intellect that can stand before Allah is this intellect! Not that the intellect has no right to speak before Infallibles. This intellect can argue before Allah. Farabi is a student of this saying, he says that when the intellect sleeps, the imagination is unleashed.
The World Congress "Farabi and Islamic Culture and Civilization" continues until Friday, 12th of Esfand (3rd of March 2023)
